🏥 Basic Program Information

This is a program in which Japanese medical personnel work with local medical personnel to provide medical support at a hospital in Arusha, Tanzania. This is not just a field trip, but an opportunity to participate in actual medical activities and experience the frontlines of international medical care.

Study Tour: 1 week
Short Term Plan: 2 weeks
Mid Term Plan: 4 weeks
Long Term Plan: 4 weeks or more

The program is offered throughout the year, but is especially intensive during the following times:

Summer: July-September (students' summer vacation)
Winter: November-January (students' winter vacation)
Spring: February-March (students' spring vacation)
Year-round: participation is possible at any time by individual arrangement.

We are happy to offer special support to students on an individual basis depending on their situation.

🎓 Eligibility

Yes, you can participate as long as you are at least a third-year medical student or a second-year nursing student and at least 20 years old.
We have students from all over the world on site.

Yes, initial residents are welcome. You may participate in the practice of medicine by obtaining a government permit before traveling to the country.

A daily conversational level (approximately 600 TOEIC) is required. Prior study of medical English is also desirable. Japanese language support will be provided by local staff.

Yes, we welcome non-physician health care professionals. They are required to obtain a government permit in advance and participate in a program of activities that make use of their respective specialties.

🛡️ Safety and Health Care

Arusha is not as safe as Japan, but it is a safe area to stay if you follow the rules. 24-hour secured accommodations are provided and local coordinators are on hand to assist you. We also have an emergency contact system in place.

Required: yellow fever vaccine
Recommended: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, meningococcal, rabies

Vaccinations take time and should be started as soon as you decide to participate.
GMC-Africa will also provide support for vaccinations during your participation consultation.

Depending on the severity of the illness, the patient can be treated at a cooperating hospital. In case of serious illness, medical evacuation to a neighboring country or Japan is also possible.

We recommend taking preventive medication and mosquito control measures. Detailed preventive measures will be provided at an information session after you have been selected to participate in the program.

🏥 Activities

- Observation and assistance in outpatient care
- Participation in ward rounds
- Participation in surgery
- Community health activities (outreach activities, health education, immunization)
- Support for medical equipment maintenance
- Case studies with local medical personnel
- Medical education activities (lectures, courses, BLS training, etc.)

Under the supervision of a local supervisor, participants can participate in medical activities according to their level. However, in accordance with local medical regulations, the content of activities will be determined with safety as the top priority.
Doctors and other qualified medical personnel must obtain a permit in advance.

Swahili and English will be used locally, and English is basically spoken. In addition, basic Swahili language courses will be offered.

We will consult with the local hospital and will now conduct research activities that meet ethical considerations.

🏠 Accommodation and living

This exclusive facility is located in a secure residential area of Arusha city. Private or shared rooms, Wi-Fi, 24-hour security, 3 meals provided by a dedicated cook, and daily housekeeping service.

We can provide rice, pasta, bread, chapatti, ngari, and other dishes as well as local dishes.
If you wish, we can cook in the kitchen upon prior consultation.

Wi-Fi environment is available in the accommodations. You can communicate with Japan and post on social networking sites without any problems.

You are responsible for doing your own laundry. Laundry service will be provided as needed.

📋 Application and Preparation

We recommend that you register at least 1-3 months in advance of your desired participation period to allow time for vaccination preparation. We especially recommend early registration for the summer and spring intensive programs.

The following cancellation policies apply:

up to 30 days before departure: 50% refund of deposit
up to 14 days before departure: 25% refund of deposit
within 14 days of departure: no refund

Yes, you will need a passport with at least 6 months validity remaining. We can also assist you in obtaining a visa for Tanzania.

- Basic clothing, towels, hand sanitizer, sandals, etc.
- Personal medical equipment (stethoscope, etc.)
- Medical books and reference materials
- Personal medications
- Appropriate clothing ( including lab coat)

A detailed packing list will be provided after your participation has been confirmed.

Yes, you will receive an official certificate of completion upon completion of the program. You can use this information on your resume and during job interviews.

International medical experience is highly valued by medical institutions and is always useful experience for employment in hospitals and medical institutions in Japan and abroad.
